Charles Martinet: The gentle giant

The first time I’ve met Charles Martinet it was in Italy, Milan. I already knew him, of course, as I've been following every Nintendo story for as long as I can remember, but I had never had the chance to meet Charles live. This possibility was given to me by the presentation of Super Mario Galaxy in Milan, by Nintendo Italy. Charles had never had anything to do with me, he didn't know me and I was nobody to him. I simply introduced myself as Davide Soliani, not even as a developer, so he had no reason to spend time with me, as instead he did. He stayed with me and my producer, chatting about a bit of everything, video games, life, giving voice to Nintendo characters. There was no pretence in his voice. He wasn't talking to us simply because he had to entertain people, he was just doing it because he felt like it. A rare thing these days.

Charles Martinet in Milan for the presentation of Super Mario Galaxy

Several years have passed since that beautiful day in Milan, before I had the opportunity to meet him once again. The opportunity was given to me in Los Angeles, at the E3 convention, during the days of the presentation of Mario + Rabbids KIngdom Battle. I was over the moon for the presentation of our game, but also very tired and emotional, while Charles, despite all the things he had to do and the people around him, allowed us not only the granted us the time to take numerous photos, but used also this opportunity to do some chat with us. Two meters and more of a gentle giant. He is indeed the right guy to give the voice to Nintendo characters.
