She Caught the Katy

Donald “Duck” Dunn was one of the most influential bassists in American soul music. As a member of Booker T. & the M.G.’s and a key session player at Stax Records, he helped create the sound behind countless classic recordings by artists such as Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, and Wilson Pickett. Known for his deep groove, simplicity, and impeccable timing, Dunn set a standard for bass playing that continues to influence musicians across soul, rock, R&B, and popular music. His work remains a cornerstone of modern bass performance.

This was the first Donald “Duck” Dunn bass line I’ve ever recorded. There’s so much groove in his playing.

I’ll keep trying to learn bass from the best. Lately, I’ve been bothering Grant Kirkhope every now and then, asking, “Hey, did I play this one better?” Fortunately, he usually says yes—although he’s quick to point out that I still need to work on my timing.

My biggest issue is that I tend to rush and play slightly ahead of the beat. It happens especially when I’m playing and recording while reading the chart instead of having the song memorized.

That said, I’m here to learn, and I’ll keep working at it the best I can.
