In the exclusion zone, there are numerous open-air depots, catering to both civilian and, at times, abandoned military vehicles. You can come across a wide array of vehicles, ranging from tanks to vans, cranes to buses, and even helicopters. The largest among them, under military control, remains the most perilous and highly radioactive even today. However, several others are scattered across the open space, easily accessible with a guide. Some are concealed in the bushes, requiring a journey on foot, while others are reachable via official roads.
Within these depots, one can find vehicles that played roles in various attempts to mitigate the nuclear crisis—vehicles used for transporting civilians, evacuating people, carrying radioactive materials, and more. While many have undergone decontamination processes, some were so radioactive that they had to be stored in guarded depots since cleaning them up was deemed impossible. Exploring an abandoned vehicle depot is like taking a journey through time, a sentiment that holds true for all of Chernobyl and Pripyat.
